3/27/12- Shortly before she was to undergo surgery for breast cancer, Arlene became affected with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Although this was unforeseen, we treated it aggressively and had every hope that she would overcome the infection and be ready to undergo the lifesaving surgery that she needed. It is with a very heavy heart that we let you know that Arlene's body was unable to overcome the infection. The MRSA spread to her internal organs and was greatly affecting her ability to breathe and causing her kidneys to shut down. Arlene earned her angel wings today. From the words of foster parent Connie, "Although we couldn't provide Arlene with a forever home here on earth, she will be my forever friend and hold a special place in my heart".
“We can’t know why the lily has so brief a time to bloom in the warmth of sunlight’s kiss upon it's face before it folds it's fragrance in and bids the world goodnight to rest it's beauty in a gentler place. But we can know that nothing that is loved is ever lost, and none who has ever touched a heart can really pass away, because some beauty lingers on in each memory of which they’ve been a part.”
We are incredibly grateful to all of those that donated in support of Arlene. Her suffering is over now, but your generosity and kindness will make a difference in the lives of other needy program dogs.
It's been raining buckets for days in Tallahassee where Arlene is fostered- in the last few days it's been raining human kindness too as donations poured in from across the states for her fight against breast cancer. We are ecstatic to report that she will be able to have the surgery she needs next week! Any funds received over the ChipIn amount are gladly appreciated for her aftercare and for other special needs program dogs. Many, many slobbery Boxer kisses to all of those who have given her this chance and we will keep you updated! Arlene is pictured here with foster sister Alex ready to kick cancer in the pa'tootie!
HELP ARLENE BEAT BREAST CANCER!
Arlene is a beautiful six year old Boxer who was found abandoned and near death floating in a swimming pool. Arlene quickly flourished in the care of BARC foster parent, Connie. However, a few months after coming in to the BARC program, a mysterious mass appeared on Arlene's belly.
Sadly, our program veterinarian has determined that this is a growth of mammary tumors, aka breast cancer. With surgery, Arlene's chances of continuing to live and happy and healthy life are good, but without the surgery, she will not survive. The surgery for these types of tumors is extensive, and therefore, even with our discounted rescue rates, the funding for this surgery is not at hand in our small, all volunteer organization. We think that Arlene deserves this chance at perhaps the only happy live she has ever known. Click here to watch Arlene's special "BARC for a Cure" video created by BARC volunteer Megan.
If you can donate any amount to this chip in below BARC (& Arlene) would be ever so grateful that people like you gave her a chance to be a breast cancer survivor. [Back]
