Checkers is a young (maybe 2-3 years old) male boxer, possibly with a little mix of bulldog. He is all white except for his docked tail, which is a tiny brown nub. He's tall and lanky and probably will be 65-70 pounds after he puts the proper weight on. He was found as a stray with a "traveling companion" and a nice lady brought them to the vet for care - this is where his foster parent saw him and just knew she had to help him out! Checkers clearly had a rough life and has the scars on his face to show it. But Checkers has remained a very sweet and submissive boy. He has only been in his foster home for a few days and since he arrived here and was shown some love and affection he just wiggles and wiggles, sometimes shimmying his body entirely across a room. He also likes to "talk" when he's happy to see you with strange little howls and barks. He's really funny! He's scared and timid around the other dogs, but doesn't try to hurt them, and they seem to really like him (he has 5 foster brothers and sisters, all boxers and bullies). In his pictures you'll see that he always looks sad or concerned, but we think he's just camera shy, for one, and also he may just not be used to having attention paid to him.
Checkers is very attentive and listens well. He learned crate/house training in one night. He is very calm and quiet and just goes in his crate to rest, or will lay by you on the floor. He doesn't hound you to be pet, and he's not destructive. He hasn't shown any interest in toys or chew-bones. He doesn't beg for food and really knows his place in our home. Even when our resident dogs get excited and bark at the door, or jump when you come home he remains calm and sweet. We don't know where he learned such good manners! We hope he finds a home where he can get the love he needs and deserves, and where there's a family that can help him build up his confidence. He is a precious boy who just needs to know he's found his forever home.
Checkers has a clean bill of health and has been neutered. He will be ready for adoption or even foster-to-adopt after November 1st. We think he'd be great in any home, with children, cats, and dogs of all sizes. He is just a gem in the rough and can be whatever you want to make him. Be sure to fill out an application for Checkers if you're interested, he's sure to get adopted soon!
Checkers is being fostered by Dana and Matt.
