Sterling
Sterling came to us from a local shelter partner in the Jacksonville area. He is deaf and has been through three homes that we know of in his short life. He is still a very young dog and is just under a year old (born in December 2006). Sterling needs an owner who is dedicated to training a deaf dog as he has some issues with vocalization (i.e. barking in his crate) and has been known to counter-surf and jump when he first meets new people. He cannot be let off-leash in an unfenced space as he will run off and cannot hear you calling him to come back. He enjoys outdoor playtime immensly and will run like a deer through the yard playing chase, so someone with a securely fenced yard would be ideal for Sterling. Visit Deaf Dog Education Action Fund for more information on owning and training a deaf dog. Sterling is being adopted by Angie in the greater Jacksonville area.
Sterling is sponsored by Angie Dennis of Ludowici, GA in loving memory of Sandy. [More]

Ariel
After spending a year's time in foster care, Ariel has joined the Borne family of Jacksonville.
Ariel is around a year old. She is a beautiful girl who has been through an amazing ordeal. Ariel was found with a taser dart in her neck. She was taken to the local emergency clinic to have it removed and has made a complete recovery. Ariel is a high energy dog and LOVES to run circles in the yard several times a day. She loves children and is very good with them, she will lick them even if they are pulling her ears (not to hard though) she just loves the attention. She gives kisses by nibbling your earlobes! As you can tell, Ariel loves to play dress up! She learns very quickly too and would be a great dog for agility training if someone was wanting to go that direction with her, I'm quite sure she would take right to it,she is very very fast and quite agile. She is full of life and energy. Ariel has the ability to jump a chain link fence, so precautions should be taken when she is outside so that she does not have the opportunity to do so. She is not thrilled with being left in a crate, but she is fine when left out in the house for short periods of time and is not destructive.

Dixie
Dixie came into our program from an animal cruelty case December 2006. She was emaciated, frightened, and in the last few days of a pregnancy. She stayed in foster care long after her puppies were weaned and adopted. She was a very sweet girl but also very timid. When she got frightened she would seek out her crate for comfort. But with lots of love, attention, and good nutrition she finally started to come around. She learned in her foster home that she could be happy. Her favorite thing to do was playing with her foster brothers and sister. If she wasn't playing, she wanted to cuddle on the couch. Dixie had been in our program for almost a year but we knew she was just waiting patiently for that perfect home. And she found it! She is now living with her new mom and boxer brother Riley and she is spoiled rotten. She loves her brother very much. They play all day together and even snuggle together at night. Her mom couldn't be happier, "They just fit!" she told us.

Jasper is a two year old male who was surrendered by his previous owner because she did not have enough time to devote to him. He is getting along well with his boxer foster sister and the jury is still out on how he will be with the cat...so far it seems like he will be ok. He loves to go for walks and loves to "box" out in the backyard with his foster sister! He is good on a leash and even though he was never crated previously, he is doing well in his crate. Gives LOTS of kisses! Housetrained. Jasper has been neutered and is currently available for adoption. Jasper is being fostered in the greater Jacksonville area by Courtney and Dan.

Chip
Chip is a cutie! He is a sweet, fairly laid back little Boxer boy who we think is around 18 months old. He has a smaller stature but at 45 lbs, he is underweight. He was impounded by an animal shelter on the panhandle and then turned over to BARC for rehabilitation and placement. As you can tell from the pictures, he is quickly making himself at home at his foster parent's house!
Chip has not had any accidents in the house and has been nothing but a well-behaved little boy. He is working on his leash manners. Chip is recovering from kennel cough and will be available for adoption after that. Chip is being fostered by Ann in Navarre.
Comments from foster home: Chip cries in his crate for a short time at night. Because his cry is so faint, I thought he couldn’t bark, but he let out a deep, loud bark when somebody rang the door bell one afternoon. Chip is very laid back! He likes to chew on his toys, but he spends a lot of time following me around and lying down whenever I’m stationary. I think Chip would make a wonderful pet for almost any type of household!

Lola
Lola a beautiful 3-5 year old fawn female. She is an extremely lovable, calm, little bundle of “boxer”! She was surrendered by her owners to a local shelter, and all she craves is love. She gives tons of kisses and wiggles all around when you talk to her and pet her. Her face is irresistible, as it is quite wrinkly and smushy. Moreover, she creates the cutest facial expressions and takes any attention she can get!
Lola is extremely well-behaved during all of her daily activities. She’s almost too good to be true! She walks well on her leash; is housebroken (never had an accident in the house); crate trained; and has no interest in chewing household items. It even took her awhile to start picking up and playing with her foster brother’s toys! Overall, Lola’s hobbies include napping, eating, and playing with her foster brother, Winston. Winston has a lot more energy than Lola does; therefore, she takes frequent breaks to rest while playing with him.
Lola is really petite, weighing around 40 lbs. Right now, she is in the process of gaining a little bit of weight and is filling out nicely. Lola was treated for heartworms and spayed prior to being turned over to BARC for placement, and she will be available for adoption by the end of the month. Lola is currently being fostered by Lisa and Josh in Jacksonville and would do very well in a home where she’d get lots of attention from her owner(s).

Collin
Hi there, my name is Collin. I am a flashy brindle male about 2 years old. I was abandoned in an apartment by my other family and was taken to animal control and thankfully I was then placed in the BARC program. I don’t understand why my old parents would move without me. I am now in foster care with three foster sisters and my foster mom and dad. I get along great with my bigger foster sister and have learned not to be so rough with my two little foster sisters since they are small. I really enjoy having another dog to play with but I could definitely be spoiled and live by myself with a tennis ball or a rope toy. My foster parents call me a klutz but it is not my fault that the walls keep jumping out in front of me while I am playing. My foster dad says that I have become his shadow, whatever that means? I am very active and really enjoy playing and running outside. I am housetrained and crate trained and know where my boundaries are in the house. I do need to work on my leash and command training but I am smart and have been getting better everyday. I am a little underweight right now (about 15 pounds) but I am eating good to gain some more weight. If you would like to adopt me please fill out an application. I know times are tough and taking care of me will require monthly heartworm prevention, vet visits, food and some comfy bedding, so if you aren’t sure you will be able to take care of me, please pass. I have already been abandoned once; I don’t want to go through it again. See you soon!!

Marley
I was born on November 4, 2007 from my Mother Bunny, I had several sisters and brothers. We were saved by B.A.R.C. and found foster homes, eventually leading us to our homes forever. I am deaf and I was named Marley while being fostered by the Peacocks. I lived with them and my foster brother Levi while they taught me some of my basic signs.
When I came to my new home on May 9, 2008 my new family fell hard for me. I have a new pack member now his name is E.J. I am learning my place in the pack very fast. My new name is B.O.L.O., which means “Be On The Look Out”. I am a very good boy and have my own swimming pool that I am still figuring out. Also two hand made beds to lay in whenever I want.
I have discovered the beanbag chair in the office where I lay when my Mom is on the computer.
I have my kennel in the master bedroom with my toys where I sleep through the whole night. My family takes me on walks and I have a new leash and harness. I am learning to wear the harness I really don’t care for it too much, but my family feels better when I wear it. I don’t go in the kennel with it on because my family doesn’t feel comfortable. They always think about my safety, E.J. comes to check on me all of the time. Sometimes he wakes me from my naps to check on me. On my first night here I tested the waters and got on the bistro table in the kitchen to watch my family in the driveway. EJ barked and told on me he’s always watching out for me. I think he likes me more than he thinks. He is very patient with me.
I am going to meet my new vet next week. The vet is very excited to meet me and have been made aware of my special needs. My new pack mate E.J. is going with me so I don’t have to be scared. He will always go with me to the vet because we all go as a family. I will also start working with a professional obedience trainer the following week, who is also aware of my special needs, and ready for the challenge.
Thank you to the Peacocks, Levi and B.A.R.C. for giving me an opportunity to find a loving family and a home for the rest of my life. I look forward to coming to some of the events for B.A.R.C. in Jacksonville to show off all the new things I have learned.
Many boxer wiggles and boxer kisses,

Please research the boxer breed and be sure that you will have the time and dedication needed to housebreak, train, and care for a boxer puppy for the next 10-15 years prior to applying to adopt. If you find that you are not up for the challenge of a puppy, please consider adopting one of our adult dogs. Many of our adult dogs are already housebroken, crate trained, and know basic obedience. Jasmine
I'm Jasmine! I'm a 16 month old flashy brindle girl and I'm looking for a new family to call my own. Like many female Boxers, I can be a bossy gal with other dogs but I would be well suited for a placement with a male canine friend. Basically, I would just love a new person/family who will be as committed to me as I will be to them. Previously, I lived with three dogs and four children. They were renting and were not allowed to have big dogs, so when the landlord found out, I was dumped at the shelter.
You may be surprised to know that my previous family paid a high price for me at a mall-based pet store. This major national pet-store chain purchased me from a puppy mill in Kansas. Although they paid a lot of money for me, they shouldn't have bought me at all and here is why: read buying pet store puppies and help others understand what they can do to stop the cruelty that my parents and other dogs at puppy mills suffer. If you read it, you'll see why even though when you walk into a pet store and see an adorable puppy like I was (and I was!) you won't buy me. If people didn't buy from places like this, they wouldn't sell puppies, and without the market the cruelty ends. It's as simple as that. WOOF!

Miley
Miley was found as an extremely emaciated stray boxer in southern Georgia. She was so thin that even just before giving birth, no one had any idea that she was pregnant with seven puppies. This is a letter from her foster mom. Miley was humanely euthanized on May 8 due to advanced lymphoma.
It’s hard to imagine what was going through Miley’s head the first time I clicked her collar around her neck and led her by leash to my car. Though she didn’t seem to mind my attention, she certainly wasn’t excited about climbing into the front seat of my vehicle. After assisting her into the seat, I began the drive home, believing that she had slipped through the clutches of a harsh life on the street and into the safety of my home and my life.
Miley was timid; she trusted no one. Whenever a stranger appeared at the door, she cowered under the kitchen table. If anyone raised his voice or made an unexpected noise, she flinched. She lived in constant anticipation of a harsh hand. Despite the fact that her first human family failed her terribly, she craved the love and affection of her new one. Like all Boxers, she wanted to be a lap dog. Our first evening together was spent with the two of us piled into the rocking chair.
Her first visit to the vet revealed that she was approximately two years old, was heartworm positive, had intestinal parasites, multiple broken teeth, and was 15 to 20 pounds underweight. The vet later explained that the damage to her teeth was likely caused by a life of confinement in which she probably tried to chew her way to escape. In addition to this, her white blood cell count was high and she had some type of infection for which the vet prescribed an antibiotic. Less than a week later, she was back at the vet’s office, this time for a mysterious bite on her hind leg believed to be caused by a spider. She spent four nights on an antibiotic drip with the vet before coming home. Her physical appearance was pitiful, but clearly this dog had a spirit and will to live that would not be defeated.
Miley had been in my home for a month when her biggest surprise was revealed: seven puppies. The vet was as shocked as I that she could carry puppies in her weakened condition. He told me that with a litter that large, it was not uncommon for one or more of the pups to be sickly and eventually neglected by the mother. In addition to this news, I learned that Miley should not have been vaccinated during her pregnancy. She was so malnourished and emaciated that it never occurred to me or to the vet that she might be carrying puppies.
Miley beat the odds again, this time with her puppies. Not only did all seven survive, they thrived. Even when clearly exhausted, she was always attentive to their needs. Though having eight dogs in one house was trying at times, in six short weeks, it was time to separate puppies from mother. The litter was sent to a foster home so that they could acclimate to life without Miley before being separated from each other.
It was during the last few days with the puppies that I began to realize that Miley’s health was beginning to decline. Impossibly, she was losing weight despite being given a healthy diet for two months. An appointment was made with the vet. New blood work would be done. Quite likely, nursing seven puppies had exhausted her. That evening as I swept the back patio, Miley, as always, was my company. She was happy that night. It occurred to me that it was the first time since I had known her to be happy. I believe that Miley was realizing that she was worthy of being loved. In all the ways humans had failed her, neglecting to teach her this was their biggest failure of all. She wagged her tail as she followed me around the yard. Many times, she stood up, putting her paws on my waist and letting me rub her head. When I was finished cleaning the patio, I sat on the back step with Miley beside me. With having a full-time job and two small children, this was not something I had really taken the time to do before then. But that night, Miley and I sat together for some time with not even enough room for our shadows in-between us. That was Miley’s last night.
Thursday morning, she couldn’t walk well. I naively hoped she had slept the wrong way and would be able to walk it off. When she refused her breakfast, I knew something was wrong. Instead of eating, she lied down behind the banana tree, the same tree where her puppies were born. Something inside of me knew that there was nothing more to be done. Though her spirit could champion over her cruel past, her body could not. Miley was put to sleep that evening. The vet said she had cancer and in her physical state, could not tolerate the treatment. There was no other choice. I think Miley knew her responsibility to her puppies was over and just wanted to go to sleep.
Miley’s blanket is still where she slept, and her bowls are still behind the banana tree where I placed them that last day. In the next few days, I’ll put them away, but right now, it’s just too soon. It’s hard to write this, but I don’t have any regrets. I’m glad Miley’s puppies have a chance at living the kind of life that she deserved. I’m glad that if she had to die, she could do so peacefully and not scared and alone. Most of all, I’m glad that this gentle creature got a chance to experience what all dogs should experience: the knowledge that her presence brought joy into the lives of those who loved her. -Miley's foster mom, Jennifer.

Bryce
Bryce is one of seven puppies born to Miley on March 25th. Bryce and his brothers and sisters came into the world with no home to call their own. Bryce is the only puppy with what appears to be a docked tail. He was born this way. He is the runt of the litter, weighing about 2 lbs less than the other pups. He is very energetic and is usually playing with toys and his litter mates.
Raising a boxer puppy demands a 10-15 year commitment, patience, and willingness to deal with training issues specific to young, energetic dogs. Please consider all of these factors before applying to adopt a puppy.
If you find that you are not up for the challenge of a puppy, please consider adopting one of our adult dogs. Many of our adult dogs are already housebroken, crate trained, and know basic obedience. Their temperaments have been tested in a variety of situations and we are able to tell you a lot about them prior to adoption.
Bryce is being fostered by Hayley and Whit in Brunswick.

Blanca
Hi, my name is Blanca. I am about 14-weeks old and looking for my forever home. I was surrendered by my owner of one week because I would not stay in the backyard unattended. I just love to explore! Playing in traffic was not a good idea, so I found B.A.R.C. as an alternative. I would like someone to teach me some manners and show me bunches of love and attention. I have so much puppy energy I could play all day! I also like to take a good nap after playing very hard. My foster mom calls me Miss Bossy because even though I am so small compared to my foster sisters, I just like to be the one calling the shots. I am not very fond of car rides and talk to my foster mom the entire way to the vet office. I am working right now on crate and potty training as well as walking on a leash, so someone with patience would be a great match for me. Everyone says I am so cute and of course I am! Please remember though, I am going to grow into a big girl one day and need someone willing to commit 10-15 years to my total happiness. I have been spayed. Are you my soul mate? Please complete an online application if you are. See you soon!

Blake
Blake was tossed from a moving vehicle along with another puppy and two kittens. He was surrendered to B.A.R.C. by an onlooker. Blake is believed to be about 10-11 weeks old and has made great improvement since we took him into the program. He is a happy puppy with a great attitude despite his rough start. Blake is doing well with his housebreaking. At night, he barks in his kennel when he needs to go potty and rarely has accidents when he is left in the kennel during the day. Blake's favorite activities are sleeping and going to work with his foster mom. He also enjoys playing in the laundry. Blake is being fostered by Hayley and Whit in Brunswick, GA and will be neutered prior to adoption.

Cletus
Cletus was found as a stray and turned over to B.A.R.C. for placement by one of our North Florida shelter partners when his owner did not reclaim him. Cletus is about 1-2 yrs old and gets along great with other dogs. He has a healthy appetite and will be neutered and vaccinated prior to adoption. Cletus will go into his crate for a treat and appears to be housebroken. He is somewhat timid around new situations, but enjoys the company of people and is an affectionate boy. He is doing really well, getting comfortable in his foster home and coming out of his shell. Cletus is learning how to sit and lay down on command. Please check back for updates on Cletus. Morgan
Morgan is a 2 year old female who is already housebroken, knows her basic obedience commands and gets along great with other dogs. She was surrendered by her owner to a local shelter after being found running as a stray with her brother, Jerry. Morgan has been vaccinated and spayed. She will need to be re-tested for heartworms in about six months, but is currently heartworm negative. Morgan's only vice is digging, which is likely why she was found running the streets a few too many times. Her new owners should take precautions when she is outside and not leave her unattended. Morgan prefers not to be crated, and is doing well left out of her crate. She is being fostered by April and Larry in Middleburg.
